How did you get into illustration and design?

When I was a child, both of my older sisters were interested in art, and I guess I followed in their footsteps! I started by tracing cartoons and even made my own comic books in junior high. I loved telling stories that way, and eventually, I rediscovered picture books. My love of art would lead me to Pratt Institute, where I studied Communication Design. I learned quite a bit at Pratt, and found how art can exist in our everyday lives, not just on our walls or in books, but also on clothing!

What inspired you to write the book Princess Hair?

When I was little, I asked my mom to straighten my hair because everyone that I knew also had straightened theirs. Our hair comes in a variety of textures and can be styled in many different ways. I wondered if we had books with princesses that featured the beauty of natural hair, would we have all wanted to change ours? I wrote my book to help empower girls who like their natural hairstyles by showing them positive representations of girls with hair like their own.

If you could give advice to today's kids, what would it be?

Follow your dreams, even when there isn't always a clear path to fulfill them. Always gather skills and knowledge about your interests – they'll always help you to improve and open new possibilities that you hadn't even thought of.
